This short biography of former President Obama will be followed by some quotes translated from English.
Barack Obama was 47 years old when he was first elected president of the United States.
His mother, a white American, and his black Kenyan father welcomed his birth in the summer of 1961 in Honolulu. Although the couple divorced soon after, his mother fell in love again with an Indonesian student. Thus, Barack Obama spent four years in Indonesia, where he received a good education, before returning to Hawaii.
Brilliant in high school and a basketball fan, his higher education in California allowed him to enter Columbia University in New York and then Harvard University at the age of 26, where he presided over a prestigious law review: the Harvard Law Review, an unprecedented position for an African-American. In the meantime, he worked as a business analyst, then as a “community organizer” in a poor neighborhood of Chicago.
He met his future wife, Michelle Robinson, who was also a lawyer. After their marriage, he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago.
His career took a turn when he decided, after much reflection, to devote himself entirely to politics: he became Senator of Illinois at the age of 36, then United States Senator at the age of 43. It is during this same period that the Obama couple gave birth to two daughters: Malia, then Sasha.
Between successes – opposition to the Iraq war – and failures – nomination refused to the House of Representatives – media, the career of Barack Obama is launched: in August 2008, he wins by a short margin against Hillary Clinton for his nomination to the Democratic Party. His insistent speeches on the unity and fraternity among Americans as well as his charisma are underlined by the Western media.
Her popularity, especially among minorities, was rewarded on November 4, 2008, when she was elected president of the United States, to the great displeasure of her opponent John McCain. President thanks to a majority of nearly 53%, he brings the United States together on foreign policy issues, whose action led to the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011, while maintaining a great popularity internationally: he was designated Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. He managed to implement his health reform, which became a symbol of his electoral promises, despite a declining domestic popularity, which was confirmed in the midterm elections.
Attempting to play on his weaknesses, Mitt Romney criticized the President’s actions during the 2012 presidential elections. However, Barack Obama gathers a large electorate, including minorities, Afro-Asians and Hispanics, and reaches a second time the presidential office at the age of 51 years.
